| Waterford New Music Week is an annual event that explores the wider scope of music. The audiences least influenced by such prejudices are young people and the vigourous programme of school workshops and masterclasses meet with a gratifying and enthusiastic response. The idea that contemporary music, while being challenging and provoking, can also be stimulating and fun is gradually making ground. Musical composition can be a creative experience for everyone with a rudimentary grasp of the language and, thanks to compuer technology, new sound worlds are becoming more accessible. Even the most ardent fan of new music has to admit that its role is fairly marginalised in society today. 'Contemporary Music' is generally equated with pop and the idea that serious composers have a role to play in society is scarcely entertained. Composers surely all wore silk breeches, ridiculous wigs and died out hundreds of years ago! |

| The Spraoi Festival, held over the August Bank Holiday weekend in Ireland, is an annual riot of colour, energy and excitement with an atmosphere that is unique among Irish festivals. It takes over city centre areas of Waterford for three days, transforming the streets and quays of the city into a giant stage for acts from all over the world. Spraoi is committed to the advancement of street arts, and the festival produces, premieres and showcases some of the best in the world. The festival is also a platform for top quality world music. And it's all free!
The Spraoi Parade, the company's own production, is traditionally held on Sunday evening and is the highlight of the festival. It's followed by a dazzling fireworks display over the River Suir, a fitting climax to a great outdoor spectacle.
In 2006 the Spraoi Festival attracted approximately 180,000 people to Waterford city, with the parade alone having an audience of 70,000.I |
